iPod kills off Dell rivals

iPod kills off Dell rivals

It may not be the official party line but what else can you blame when a company like Dell decides to axe it's hard-disk series of MP3 players? According to a Dell spokesman, the company has decided to withdraw from the high-end of the MP3 player marketplace, axing the 5Gb Pocket DJ, 20Gb Dell DJ20 and 30Gb Dell DJ30 music players. The only player that Dell will continue to sell is the 512Mb Flash-based DJ Ditty. Liem Nguyen at Dell said: “We are streamlining our product portfolio”.

He denied it had anything to do with Apple's dominance of the MP3 player market and said it was more to do with customer demand. Considering most customers are demanding iPods, we'd have to conclude that it has a lot to do with Apple after all. Still, losing a big player like Dell is bad news for us consumers since less iPod rivals means less competition in the market and ineveitably, higher prices. More details here.

Way back in 2003 Dell had launched Dell Digital Jukebox also called Dell DJ. They had a collaboration with Creative at that time. However the production was stopped in 2006. The device is going to be identical to iPod with a music download facility rivaling the iTunes.
As per information presently available the device will be having a small navigation screed and basic buttons for various functions. It uses Wi-Fi to connect to online music services. The device is likely to be priced in the sub $100 range.

TouchMan emotion cell phone concept

TouchMan emotion cell phone concept
Posted in Concepts by Conner Flynn on April 11th, 2008
The TouchMan cellphone concept is interesting because it can actually become a piece of furniture that allows you to communicate in a more personal way with others. That’s because the device allows for the visual sharing of emotions. Think of it as a combination screensaver, instant messenger and…aquarium.
That’s right, you can watch your contacts like fishes in an aquarium on the touchscreen. They would change color and activity according to their current moods and availability. Very bizarre indeed, but it has a lot of potential. The docking station will charge the main station and the cellphone at the same time, and when the cellphone is disconnected, the main device goes into a sleep mode.

The Tiny, Green Dell

The Tiny, Green Dell You Can't Buy (Yet)

Ignore the keyboard, mouse and Vista-rific monitor. See that on the right? That's Dell's computer-rendered vision of its next-gen PC.

It's compact and has style, there's no arguing that. And according to Gizmodo, it will be "81% smaller than a mini tower and 70% less energy-consuming." But will it play Crysis?

No word on when you'll be able to order one at Dell.com, because for now, it's just some fancy pixels.

Update: Earth2Tech has pics of a familiar little machine but draped in bamboo. They peg the cost at somewhere in the $500 - $700 range and availability at sometime this year.

Now you've really got my attention! Are you listening Dell?

ADAMO BY DELL

There’s this little teaser site with Dell written all over it that says a future laptop is going to be even lighter and thinner than the lightest of them all so far, the MacBook Air. Is Apple ready to get a competitor for that share of the market?
The Adamo might be the future laptop of choice for someone interested in an Air-like experience. What we can say for sure is that Dell’s version of a thin laptop will be way cheaper than Apple’s Air. We have no idea when this notebook is going to be released but we’re hoping 2009.
